Opacity masks are a create way to help create that illusion of realism. I used two of my earlier assignments to help with this. The city scape required a lot of editing because I couldn't put the whole scene in the glass, so as you can imagine, my computer crashed AGAIN and AGAIN. At any rate, in the end I was able to create a credible version of a city in a glass globe. For the second picture, I created an opaque multi-colored vase with pink flowers. I used the 3D to create the base, as I did with the globe. Kind of a different look but I think it's effective and hey, you can even see the stems! Fun techniques to work with!

This is a two-point perspective drawing in Illustrator. All the buildings and windows were created using rectangles. It's harder than it looks (at least it was for me) and, of course, my computer crashed numerous times. I just saved about every two actions I did. It turned out to be a lot of fun, however. I did add a few "extras" just for fun. The clouds, trees, grass, cars, people, cat and dog are actually symbols within the Illustrator program. I changed the colors.
This was a fun assignment, although it was much harder than it looks, at least it was for me. The tulip was drawn using a pencil tool and that alone took me numerous tries as I simply can't draw. I included the "evolution of the flower" so you could see the process I went through to create different versions using gradient meshes to create realistic-looking petals. Once I completed the flower, I used the warp tool to change the flower shape to create different versions. After that, I made them symbols so I could use them over and over in the picture on the right. There are so many applications this could be used for. Me? I'm happy the flower actually looks like a flower!
This is a lot harder than it looks. At least it was for me. I believe I created some realistic (okay, maybe not exactly!) commercial packaging. The first picture is of the different packages I created and the second one are the individual elements I created to put the packages together. And I have to admit, it's kind of fun to create 3D images from boxes!
This was an interesting assignment. Tried a bunch of different things. The ladybugs, stems and dandelion are all fake - all done with brushes I created using just lines. Pretty cool stuff. The poster was the book assignment. This assignment was done using just two brush strokes I created. They are at the bottom. If you look really closely, you can see the progression using just those two strokes in various combinations. This one just about crashed my computer - took up a lot of memory! Yikes!!!
Working with gradient tools can be pretty rewarding - you can do some amazing things! These are my pictures, except for the boat, which was an assignment from the book. The marbles, plants, rocks and shell are just illustrations using mesh tools to create realism. Cool, right? Check out this flash file. My original intent was to use my marble illustrations from above in the flash file but I was unable to animate them, so I created circles instead. I will figure it out!! This is my retro poster design. You can probably tell where I spent the weekend. Yes, I was at the Seattle Women's March 2.0 on Saturday and I got some really nice footage. These are two photos I meshed together to tell a story. Not sure about the colors but I think I like the way it turned out. Here's the book assignment. Not my own design. I just did the rearranging with all the type.
Here's my first stab at creating an animated version of our dog Cooper. Still needs some work and it doesn't look like Cooper, but it's a start. Book assignments - not my images but I did do the editing.
These are my own designs, created using basic shapes like ovals and then creating transformations. Various techniques were employed to make color variations. Pretty fun stuff!! This was a stock assignment. I included this so you could see the basic shapes I started with to create the various birds. All of this was done in Illustrator. This was also an assignment, much like the bird assignment above, with various objects that required molding to create the finished project below. This is a book cover, including dust jacket.
